| 内容記述 | In pre-modern Islamic society, the practice of charitable endowment called waqf played a significant role, especially for those living in urban area, in meeting substantial needs of daily life. To explore the theoretical framework for analyzing waqfs, and the way for applying it to historiography, this paper examines the perspective of “Long Divergence”, an analytical framework proposed by Timur Kuran in his book with the identical title to explain the underdevelopment of the Middle East in relation to Islamic law. Kuran’ s attempt to understand the waqf as an institution regulated by Islamic law within the methodology of comparative institutional analysis deserves paying attention, because it has the potential to shed light on the relationship between waqf and economic development from the supra-historical and global perspective. Although his approach is quite problematic as a method for explaining the reality, it allows us to theoretically consider each waqf case, based not only on their particularity but on their universality. It also leads us to raise a question about the possibility of waqf studies conducted in recent years within the framework of area studies, which emphasize the historical and regional characteristics of each case. | |||||||||
