内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Edmund Charles Blunden, a pacifist and early biographer of James Henry Leigh Hunt, was invited to be a professor of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University before the Second World War. Blunden’s great influence on Japanese students and scholars as a teacher has often been compared with that of Lafcadio Hearn, another renowned educator, and he has been memorialized by a monument featuring his poetry in Hiroshima. This study focuses on his sincere friendship with Takeshi Saito, his colleague at Tokyo Imperial University and how Blunden encouraged the Japanese scholars and prepared the way to peace before and after the Second World War through his studies regarding Hunt. According to Saito, who admitted Blunden’s self-effacing faith in the Japanese during the Sino- Japanese War, most of Blunden’s studies regarding Leigh Hunt, such as Leigh Hunt’s “Examiner” Examined and Leigh Hunt : A Biography, were written in Tokyo, and constituted the result of their combined efforts. He accentuated these facts in his review of these studies, and so did Blunden. In the preface of the former, Blunden expresses his gratitude to Saito, who prepared Examiner for his own sake, for his appropriate advices. Although Saito did not clarify the reason for his contribution, this study explores it by examining reminiscences regarding Masahisa Uemura, a clergyman who wrote a brief biography on Hunt fighting for freedom and public welfare. Furthermore, based on another remark from Saito, this study examines another biography on Hunt by Tano Jodai, who came to appeal for the prohibition of nuclear weapons after the war. It is remarkable that both Blunden and Jodai focused on Hunt’s anti-war poem, Captain Sword and Captain Pen in their biographies. Thus, Blunden promoted studies regarding Leigh Hunt in Japan, and this encouraged the Japanese who sought peace.
