An increasing number of studies of legislatures in established democracies are employing empirical analyses of Hansards. This method has played a critical role in the development of some new theories in legislative studies. However, researchers working on semi-democracies have not made extensive use of this method. This is unfortunate because Hansards constitute an important source of data for studying politics in these countries, and are becoming more accessible thanks to online publishing. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of the empirical analysis of Hansards as well as the challenges associated with it by analyzing the patterns of Nigerian senators’ references to the incidents of political violence in the country. Existing studies of legislatures in semi-democracies cast doubt on their efficiency and autonomy. Preliminary analyses of the Nigerian senators’ responses to the incidents of political violence provide some evidence against this skepticism, although the results of these analyses leave some doubts regarding senators’ autonomy from the executive. |
